Self-Assessment Essay

Learning objectives are statements about the knowledge, skills and abilities that every student should possess and display after completing a certain class.  During this semester I have learned multiple things in my class Writing for Engineering. I have learned different writing techniques, different forms of APA formatting, and how to find and properly use different sources. Through class exercises and writing the different types of papers I was able to learn those skills. Which was an objective of this course, it was to enhance strategies for reading, drafting, revising, editing, and self-assessment. Although I have learned a variety of things, my skills when it comes to writing still needs improvement. Skills such as proper grammar and APA format still need some adjustment. Even though I have things to improve on, this semester I was still able to improve some areas of my writing skills.

Through the semester I was able to completely write a paper for particular audiences and for different purposes. I was able to achieve that goal through the three different papers I wrote through the course of this semester. Those three papers were a letter of introduction, technical description, and the group project proposal. When I first began composing those papers I had to think of the audience. That meant brainstorming the type of language and information to supply in the papers. For example, my proposal was about a revising vending machine. My audience for this paper was mainly aimed for people who would care about saving the environment and recycling issues.

Along with thinking about the audience, thinking about the purpose was also important. Among the three papers I had a different purpose for each. Writing the technical description helped me strengthen my source use practices (quoting, paraphrasing, summarizing, synthesizing, analyzing, and citing sources). This helped me practice using various library resources, online databases, and the Internet to locate sources appropriate to your writing projects. Similar to the technical description assignment my proposal had a purpose too, but unlike in the technical   description in the proposal I was informing people about the benefits of this vending machine and why it is a good idea to have it. Editing, and revising were two things that I used to always overlook and ignore. However, this class showed me the benefits of always editing and revising and how effective it can be.

There have been a couple of things that I have learned about my writing throughout the semester. Every time I learn something new about my writing, I realize that it always ends up benefiting my writing because I as soon as I see a mistake that I did in one of my writings, I immediately know that I have to fix it in whatever paper I’m writing next. One mistake that I noticed in some of writings would have to be that on multiple occasions I often tend to get very repetitive. I’ll state something in the first body paragraph and without realizing I’ll use the same information that I just used in the first body paragraph in the second also and I usually only realize when I re-read my paper over again when I am completely done. Not only has this helped me be more aware of my papers while I’m writing but it has also taught me that I should always re-read whatever I write at the end because it allows me to see any mistakes that I did that I might not have noticed in the middle of witting it.
