Dear Ms. Jacobson,
In a city in upper Egypt called Menia, a man had two children. The older daughter had the goal of becoming a dentist. I the younger one, like my father, loved mathematics to a level that my mother used to yell at me to study other school subjects. My love for math and the joy I found while doing it led me to decide to learn something related to math and eventually, committed to studying engineering.
My family had to move to the United States of America and we had to find a way to survive in a country that is completely different than the one we were raised in. This was one of the major challenges in my life. I felt reluctant to leave my home, but I had no choice but to follow my parents. After arriving in New York City, I found myself feeling lost in a foreign place, where I had to learn a new language. Moreover, growing up in a new culture was a strain, as my parents maintained the cultural norms of Egypt. I had to fill in the wide gaps between these two societies. I knew that I would face obstacles to my academic goals, but I was determined to overcome them and worked to adapt to the challenges I encountered.
In New York, specifically in Times Square, I felt like I was in heaven as I looked at all those skyscrapers and their magical appearance that inspired me take to continue running after my dreams and to take my first step by deciding to be a civil engineer. As a student who wants to study civil engineering, I believe that civil engineering is not just a career or a job a person can
work to make money. It is like magic to make the world look better. There are fashion designers to help people look perfect and find the beauty in every person. Civil engineers are like fashion designers for the world; they decorate and draw a picture of the world that can make people happy just by looking at that picture. They turn that perfect image into a reality for people to experience. As an Egyptian born and raised in Egypt, I have witnessed the magnificent pyramids which are considered one of the most important structures for every engineer and everyone around the world. I have also seen the skyscrapers with all the technology. I believe that it is never impossible to combine the magic of the pyramids with the power and beauty of skyscrapers. Therefore, it is my dream and goal to make a future with a new version of structure and engineering.
Throughout life an individual has many achievements, but there are some that are inevitable. Throughout high school I participated in numerous sports teams, one of which was cross country. I received many medals and was always achieving a greater distance. I was part of the national honor society all four years of high school. Throughout high school life, my extracurricular achievements helped me develop many skills. Being the head of the basketball team, I exercised my leadership and collaborative skills. An engineer requires leadership and cooperative skills. This is because he must become the leader in different projects. Interpersonal skills also play a significant role in an engineer’s life because they will always be required to communicate with new people. My greatest achievement was when I graduated high school and was accepted into the city college of New York civil engineering program. This made me feel like I am a step closer to my dream.
As a student, my skills and will allow me to accept challenges I face with confidence. My talents include teamwork, leadership, interpersonal and hands-on skills. These are key abilities engineers must have to be successful. Engineering is an exciting field that I believe will be
enjoyable, challenging. I believe pursuing engineering means exceeding your expectations and making the world more modern.
I am a very hard worker. This is the way I would like people to perceive me. I am always trying my best no matter what goes on in my life. I would like you to see me as a student who puts effort in everything I do. I like to make things perfect even if it does not require so. I would also like you to see me as a determinate and persevering person. I never give up on a dream I have. Therefore, no matter how many people tell me that perusing my engineering degree is going to contain many hardships I will conquer them all.
I imagine my future place in the world of engineering to be a great fit for me. Engineers are the backbone of modern living. I believe engineering is the best fit for me because engineers satisfy both themselves and the people around them, and this is the reason for my passion for engineering. The idea of seeing my own drawing come to life is what triggers my desire to become an engineer. Throughout history engineers created the greatest innovations such as the pyramids. Some of the engineering challenges I would like to be involved with are projects that require me to think outside the box.
Your truly,
Efraim Hanna
